Freescale MCU helps to get Beijing air cleaner

MUNICH, Germany — Startup company ElectroJet Inc. makes a contribution to bring clean air to the Olympic games in China: The US-based company provides fuel injection systems to Dayang Motorcycle Co. of China. The injection systems are electronically optimized for low air pollution and high fuel economy. The MCU that controls the system comes from chip vendor Freescale.

Dayang Motorcycle is the official motorcycle supplier for the Olympics, and during the games the Beijing police equips their staff with motorcycles from Dayang which are equipped with the ElectroJet injection system.

According to Electrojet CEO Kyle Schwulst, the bolt-compatible injection systems generates 65 percent less carbon monoxide and 35 percent less other toxic cases compared to a standard carburetor system. Also the fuel consumption gets lower — by 12 percent in average — if the standard system is replaced by the Electrojet injection system, claims Schwulst. "We reduce the cost but not the performance," he said in an interview with Automotive DesignLine Europe.

The MCU, a Freescale S12XE 16-bit device with integrated XGATE coprocessor, processes the signals delivered from intake pressure monitoring sensors to generate signals for ignition timing and fuel supply, Schwulst explained. The system is applicable to four-stroke engines, but not to multi-cylinder automotive engines, he said.

With the design, the company hopes to conquer emerging markets, in particular in India and China. For this reason, the injection system exceeds the current US and Euro-III standards. These standards are relevant to make business in China and India, since this countries are expected to implement legal rules for emission reduction in the middle therm. They will "essentially copy European regulations", believes Schwulst.
